Travertine Stones.
Read about the differences between
travertine and pure marble.
Travertine
is a
metamorphic stone.
Travertine tiles are a very dense
form of Calcium Carbonate and
although it is a spring-water
Limestone, many people refer to
travertine as a
marble.
However,
because of its
characteristics and cavity
structure, travertine is generally
considered apart from marble and
limestone.
Travertine was used in ancient Roman
times as extensive deposits exist at
Tivoli, Italy, near Rome. We can find historical buildings
using travertine in all parts of
the world, such as the Sacré-Cœur
Basilica in Paris and the Getty
Center in Los Angeles. The largest
building in the world that was
constructed mostly of travertine is
the Colosseum in Rome
that is standing today after 2000
years.
Almost all of the travertine stone
that is used here in the US is
imported from other countries, such
as Turkey, Mexico, Italy,
and from Peru.
Travertine is an excellent stone and
if it is laid and sealed properly
could look just as nice as pure
marble.
Characteristics of Travertine:
Travertine tiles are usually comes
in Honed
and Polished
finishes. Travertine can be unfilled
and filled.
Travertine varies from pale to dark
cream with pores, cavities and other
surface variations. These surface
variations are the voids on the
surface of the travertine stones.
This pitted surface was
created by the gas bubbles that
become trapped in the stone in the
time of its formation a few million
years ago.
Some people prefer these voids as it
gives some extra character
and a distinct pattern
to the
floor, however you can also find
travertine stones that are filled at
the factory with resin so it has a
much smoother finish. This is
referred to as filled travertine
finish. Some people prefer the
filled travertine for indoor
applications as it is easier to
clean and maintain. An unfilled
travertine will attract dirt
much easier than a filled
travertine.
In
residential applications the
polished surface is more popular.
Polished travertine has a glossy
surface that reflects light and
highlights the coloring and markings
of the stone. Generally, a honed
finish is preferred for floors,
stair steps and on other high
traffic areas.
A
travertine tile is harder than
limestone and it is usually
available in 12mm thickness, an
important consideration when floor
levels are an issue.
While
travertine is a long lasting and
durable stone, just as any other
building material has its strengths
and limitations. All polished
travertine marble will lose their
polish in exterior applications and
will fade over time in direct
sunlight.
Travertine such as all marble has
the tendency to absorb oils and
other liquids. Travertine tiles can
be easily scratched and have the
tendency of being sensitive to acid.
Travertine is not as moisture
sensitive as the red, black and
green marbles however, treating it
with water or oil repellent sealer
especially in the bathroom and the
kitchen is highly recommended.
Remember! Give
proper care to travertine and it
will sustain its beauty for many
years to come. If you wish to read

I am a
big fan of travertine myself. And in
the last year we have completed many
jobs with this type of stone,
including some very high-end
projects. I have some of my pictures
on this page.
Besides, we have done some
fireplaces from travertine
too. Moreover, we used this stone
on pools, steps, walkways and more.
If you
wish to see any of the completed
jobs I easily can make arrangements
with the owners. They all were happy
with both the price and the quality
so a sort visit won’t be a problem.
