All About Marble.
Read on to find
out why marble stones are a great
choice for even the most discerning
home.
Marble
is a
metamorphic stone.
It was at one time a limestone or
dolomite that has been structurally
altered
through
the heat and pressure of
metamorphism into a dense, variously
colored, crystallized rock.
There are a surprising number of
options available in marble tiles,
including many different sizes, with
varieties
of veining, patterns and
colors so there's bound to be
something out there that's just
right for your next marble tiling or
marble flooring project.
Architects incorporate marble into
their designs for hundreds of years.
They used
marble on the palaces of Caesars in
the Renaissance of Europe, on the
Greek Parthenon in Athena and marble
stones played an important role as a
building material and fine arts on
many other historical buildings.
Marble tiles and marble stones are
very popular.
As a
matter of fact overtime it become so
popular that marble literally become
a trade term. Nowadays the term
marble is used to classify a wide
rage of stones used for decorative
purposes that are capable of taking
a
polish. Probably this is
the reason why many people consider
a polished travertine (that is
basically a limestone) as
travertine
marble. This is basically true
because we can consider travertine a
young marble.
Characteristics of Marble:
Finish:
Marble tiles are usually
comes in Honed
and
Polished
finishes. In residential
applications the polished surface is
more popular. Polished marble has a
glossy surface that reflects light
and highlights the coloring and
markings of the stone. Generally, a
honed finish is preferred for
floors, stair steps and other
high traffic areas.
Color: Although, pure
marble is white, there are marble
tiles that are red, black and even
green.
While
marble is a long lasting and durable
stone, just as any other building
material has its strengths and
limitations. All polished marble
will lose their polish in exterior
applications however,
dolomitic marbles are more
susceptible to weathering therefore
they should not be used for exterior
applications and in extreme weather
conditions.
Characteristics:
Marble
stones have the tendency to absorb
oils and other liquids. Marble tiles
can be easily scratched and have the
tendency of being sensitive to acid.
Marble is moisture sensitive as a
rule. Some, such as the red, black
and green marbles are extremely
moisture sensitive. Therefore
treating marble with water or oil
repellent sealer especially in the
bathroom and the kitchen is highly
recommended.
Marble tiles and marble stones can
easily lose their shine and beauty
due to damage resulting from the
everyday use and improper cleaning.
However, given proper care, marble
will sustain its beauty for many
years to come. If you wish to read
