How to choose the
right ceramic tiles for your room.
Ceramic
tile installation. Is this flooring
option right for my house?
If you
are looking to upgrade and
invigorate the floors or walls of
your house you have many options to
consider.
However,
perhaps the most economical and
simplest way to accomplish this is
choosing glazed or ceramic tiles for
your floors. In this article
I wish to provide you with some
basic information about the
different types of ceramic tiles you
can use for your floor remodeling
project.
Depending
on the size of the area you wish to
remodel, you can save hundreds of
dollars by going with this popular
choice of flooring today. Ceramic
tiles can be found in a staggering
variety of sizes, colors and shapes.
What size tile should you
choose? HMMM... I guess this is a
similar issue as how to do bench
press in the gym. Everyone has a
different opinion about it. But if
you want mine, I always lean to the
largest size tile possible. The
bigger the tile the less time is
needed for grout cleaning, the
installation is easier and faster
and larger size tiles tend to
generate more interest visually. In
smaller rooms think about the
proportion of the area and decide if
you can go with the same size as in
the other rooms to keep the
uniformity throughout the home.
Installing
ceramic tiles is not only an
economical option but it is the
simplest way to add a rich touch to
your floor, backsplash and walls
anywhere in your house. If the grout
lines between the tiles are filled
with complementary colored grout it
will set a better overall appearance
of the floor. However, the wider
grout lines tend to accumulate dirt
and can look bad overtime. So it is
a delicate choice between the
complementing elegant look of an 1/8th
of an inch grout line and the
professional appearance of the 1/16th
of an inch joint line. You can create a
little more interest in the room if
you install the ceramic tiles
diagonally.
Or
enhance the look of your ceramic
tile walls with hand painted tiles,
decorative ceramic tiles and tile
murals to give a more personal,
creative, and artistic touch of art
on ceramic tiles.
Making
and incorporating ceramic tiles on
buildings goes way back. It’s been
used on homes and villas built by
the ancient Romans well over 2000
years ago. Its popularity hasn’t
faded ever since. It is a preferred
inexpensive choice for today’s
homeowners, architects and builders
alike. Ceramic tile manufacturers
tend to change the sizes of their
tiles over the years. But probably
the most popular sizes used today
are typically 6 inches to 12
inches-square and bigger. Subway
sized tiles are also a very popular
option for kitchen backsplashes and
even for shower walls. Since ceramic
tiles are fired, expansion and
contraction can occur making some of
the ceramic the tiles smaller than
its original size. This difference
is usually not bigger than
one-sixteenth of an inch but it is
wise to check the boxes beforehand
of delivery.
Ceramic
tiles can be almost any colors.
Italian ceramic tiles represent the
widest array of colors in their
repertoire, while ceramic tiles
imported from Mexico tends to have
distinguishable reddish and brownish
colors. Mexican saltillo tiles even
have a footprint of dogs on certain
tiles, that become a trademark of
their tiles overtime. Try buying
ceramic tiles from the same
lot and shade number. This will
ensure a consistently colored tiles
throughout the house. Otherwise if
not sure ask for a few sample tiles
and try them at home and see if the
color will go well with your
project. Many ceramic tile seller
lets you take a few pieces if they
see that you are a serious buyer.
You can also order some sample tiles
on the internet for a small fee.
Since it is
almost certain that you will need to
cut some of your ceramic tiles
during installation, it is a good
idea to buy some extra tiles.
Ordering 10% extra tiles is a safe
bet that you are not gonn'a make
extra trips to the tile store for
more tiles. It is a smart thing to
save the left over tiles for future
in case the tiles break and needs
replacements. Shop around and visit
multiple tile stores. Or looking for
online ceramic tile retailers and
wholesalers is a wise idea. In many
cases you can find discontinued or
overstocked tiles for your project
with considerable savings.
Ceramic
tiles are most suitable for indoor
applications however, tiles that is
not glazed and non slippery can be
recommended as outdoor tiles.
Although
installing ceramic tiles are an easy
fit for the do it yourselfers, there
is some crawling around and getting
down on your knees involved. So if
you can’t take the dirt and the
hassle I would recommend you to hire
professional ceramic tile
installers.
How much will
it cost to hire a pro ceramic tile
installer?
There are
certain factors that play a role in
determining the price of the
installation. The installer has to
know if there is going to be any
existing tiles or carpet that needs
to be removed. And whether the
ceramic tile installer needs to move
any furniture, or replace toilets.
Also if the ceramic tiles will be
installed horizontally on the floor
or vertically on a wall. The prices
for ceramic tiles can range from
$1.20 to 3.50 per sft. However, if you have
a simple project you can easily find
some bargains on ceramic tiles in
the $0.80-$0.90 range. The price of
installation is vary but ballpark
prices are between $2.00 and $3.00
per sft, depending on the situation.
