How to install thin brick veneer.
If you are pondering about
installing thin brick veneers
yourself the following article will
walk you through the necessary steps
needed for a long lasting and
stunning outcome that will make all
your friends and neighbors envy.
 |
First
hand I would like to clear
the confusion; yes it is
possible to install thin
brick veneers on top of
drywall and wooden
structures. However, before
you rush to get your brick
veneers installed on these
surfaces I suggest read the
following advice.
On
drywalls you have to install
1/8th of an inch
cement backer boards and
fasten it to the studs with
dry wall screws. |
If you wish to install your thin
brick veneers on a wall that is
constructed from plywood a
water-resistant surface must be
placed over the original framework
to prevent moisture build-up and
mold from rotting out the walls.
|
Wire lath installation:
Begin at the right hand bottom
corner of the wall.
Leave the paper backing overlapping
1-1/2” on the sides and the top. The
sheets should always be installed
horizontal, perpendicular to the
framing.
Fasten the wire lath with 1” screws.
After installation apply a
scratch-coat of mortar.
|
 |
After the scratch coat mortar dried
you can begin the installation of
the
thin brick veneers. To install
thin brick veneers on a
masonry wall such as, bricks, block
or stone you won’t need to undergo
any major preparation.
You will need a
clean dust and oil free wall to
begin with. The first step is to
apply some blue bonding agent with a
paint roller. Pour the bonding into
a paint tray and dip the roller in
the bonding agent. You can dilute
the agent with some water for better
coverage.
After applying
the bonding agent you can mix your
mortar.
I would advice
you to mix your thinset to a much
harder consistency than you would
for any other tile or natural stone.
The reason for this is to prevent
the thin brick veneers from sliding
down after you stick it to the wall.
We also add a splash of white
bonding additive to the mixture for
better overall performance. Keep in
mind that this is just the setting
material, the grouting process
require a different type of mortar.
 |
After
mixing your thinset mortar
you can start laying out
your courses on the wall.
There are a few different
methods for the
installation. You can
"butter" the brick itself
and lightly press it to the
wall.
It is
important to keep your
thin brick veneers
dust free. It is essential
for proper bonding of the
bricks and a long lasting
installation. |
|
The other way of installing
brick veneers is applying
the setting material
directly on the wall with a
notched trowel (in this case
mix your thinset to a more
watery consistency for
easier application) and
install the thin brick
veneers one after the other.
Whichever way you choose to
install your thin brick
veneers I would advice you
to have a guideline for each
course. This can be a simple
masonry string line. |

|
Keep the head-joints equally
sized and level all the way
up. Time to time you should
step back a few feet and
look at your wall for bricks
that are out of place.
Adjust accordingly.
|
The last step in installing
thin brick veneers is
grouting.
I suggest picking up a grout
bag from home depot. Cut the
end of the bag to a bit
wider hole. Also you should
mix your grouting mortar to
a much watery consistency.
This will help you squeeze
the mortar out of the bag
more easily. |

|
If
you wish to see some
different color in the brick
joints you will have to mix
the color of your choice.
Use a mixture of white
S-type of mortar and simple
sanded tile grout in the
color you prefer.
|
 |
Important:
Mix the colored grout that
would cover the whole entire
wall in one batch. If you
are unable to achieve this
you should keep very
accurate measurements of
your ingredients. Otherwise
you could be seeing
differences in the tones of
your colors in your joint
lines.
After
filling up the joints
between the brick veneers
you should strike it with a
concave tool and lightly
brush the area with a soft
brush.

Clean the haze
off the thin brick veneers with a
sponge if it is possible. It is
fairly easy to install thin brick
veneers yourself. However, if you s
keep these simple steps in mind
during installation you will have a
brick wall that .
