Old
Chicago bricks were originally made
in the Chicago area from the clay
that was producing that very
familiar cream colored bricks,
between the shades of red and black.
These bricks can come from the
chimney of an old factory or a
bathroom that was painted green in a
Chicago area bar.

Old
Chicago bricks are an excellent
choice both for exterior and
interior applications. Exterior
brick veneers can be
installed as full sized bricks 2”1/4
X4”x8”, it is wall tied or adhered
to the exterior wall of the house.
However due to size
and weight issues
full bricks are not
always a viable
option.
For
interior work the best option is the
thin sliced real Chicago brick veneer.

The brick
veneers on this page are real clay antique old
Chicago bricks.

These bricks were sliced
from the same hundred+
years old Chicago
bricks. It is the real
brick but the two face
sides were sawn off to
about 3/8th of an inch
thickness to accommodate
the needs of the
interior applications.
 |
It can be
installed on any wall in your house.
It requires no footing or any
concrete base that load-bearing
brick walls would need.

If the wall is made of
dry wall the contractor
simply needs to
reinforce the drywall
with 1/8th of an inch
cement backer boards to
provide the proper
bonding and adhesion.
The Chicago bricks, or so to say
the brick veneers, are
installed on top of the
cement boards with
thin-set. Shown in
picture on the right. |

It is
advisable to reinforce the drywall
because it is made of gypsum and
paper. It might not hold the weight
of the thin brick veneer. Although
we installed old Chicago brick
veneer on top of the dry wall
without the cement backer boards
however, the height of the wall did
not exceed 5 feet.
Incorporating old Chicago bricks in

but helps the environment. It is the

construction project.
