Main characteristics of stones used
for building materials.
Find out
everything about the stone that
covers your floor.
Stones that the modern architecture
incorporates into building
materials, (either
for decorative or finishing
purposes),
basically come from
three major groups.
Igneous,
Metamorphic and Sedimentary.
Although,
the words
give us some clues to guess the
definition, we still need to explain
the difference.
Igneous
rocks are
basically formerly molten rocks.
This rock type were formed under
conditions of intense heat or
produced by the solidification of
volcanic magma on or below the
Earth's surface. For example
Granite
is an igneous rock that has cooled
and crystallized below the earth's
surfaces.
Metamorphic
refers to change in the rock
structure. These
changes in the physical structure of
the rock can be a result of
long-term heat and pressure,
especially a change that increases
the rock's hardness and crystalline
structure.
This
recrystallization transforms the
shale into a colorful slate,
the
limestone
to a multi
colored marble
and alters the grainy sandstone into
a highly crystallized sparkling
quartzite.
Sedimentary.
This group is divided
into
four main
types.
First
there are the types that are the
result of some preexisting rock's
demise through the weathering
process. Sandstone is a good
example for this kind of sedimentary
rock. It is made up of particles of
sand bound together with “mineral
cement”.
The
second kind is the biogenic
stone. These types of stones
produced by living organisms such as
marine life or vegetation which died
millions of years ago and the
remains became part of the sediment
on the bottom of ancient sea beds.
Certain
Shellstones,
such as
Limestone,
Coral stone and Fossil stone are
good examples of the biogenic
stone.
The third
kind is very similar to the second.
The only difference here is that
this type of rock is produced by
inorganic chemical
material being deposited on the
floor of ancient sea or lake beds.
Travertine stones
are considered to be from this kind.→
And last
but not least there are sedimentary
stones that are
volcanic
and igneous in nature. It is also
classified as an igneous stone due
to its volcanic origin but the
difference is that it is formed
under sea bed. Cantera and Adoquin
are considered as this type.
